Located on the tip of the Yucatán Peninsula where it nudges into the waters of the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean Sea, Cancún is a unique blending of ambiance, both Mexican and Caribbean. Today, Cancún is a popular retreat for Hollywood stars, who seek out this western-Caribbean resort area for its tropical beauty and Mexican flavor. But prior to 1974, when the state of Quintana Roo (of which Cancún is a part) received statehood, the ambiance of this tourist magnet was that of a small fishing village. Today Cancún has been totally transformed from a little village which was home of a dozen or so families to a thriving tourist center with a population of approximately 350,000 residents.

Airport code is CUN. The least expensive way for people in the western US to see the Caribbean
Sea. This is a destination designed for tourism. Great beaches and water so clear you can see for
150 to 200 feet. Most of the hotels are resort type offering tennis, golf, pools etc.. The hotels fall
into 2 categories, all inclusive (includes food and drinks) or European Plan which is like most
hotels in the States. We do not provide information about hotels that we do not book, which currently includes
condo's, apartments and rental homes. There are a variety of restaurants available even a German one! This is one
of the places you can spend 7 days without going to the same place twice. Scuba diving,
snorkeling, Mayan Ruins, night clubbing, dancing, folkloric ballet, sit on the beach doing nothing.

We have also located the
hotels in 4 areas,Cancun City on the mainland an approx 20 square blocks , the Cancun North Shore or Bay Side offers large beaches with no waves, which could be good for families with small
children , the best place to stay is Cancun Caribbean Shore Resorts*(Hotel Zone) of the island, but sometimes has strong undertow and does have waves an beaches that tends to be a little smaller, Puerto Moralas* and the Playa del Carmen (aka Mayan sun coast) Mayan Suncoast Hotels Playacar Area south of Cancun and is located on the Caribbean.

Cancun CityMain thoroughfare is known as Avenida Tulum . Bus system good and inexpensive 0.50USD per ride taken up to midnight. Taxi's are regulated ask the doorman at your hotel for point to point cost.

Isla Mujeres has some small hotels that we book.

Most hotels in Cancun restrict the number of persons in a room to 4. Yes, a baby is a person even though it may not act like it at times. All hotels are located on the beach unless otherwise
indicated. The reason for the map, is to orient you to the area. While some of the hotels are listed,
some have had a name change or have been replaced.

A little about Isla Mujeres (island of women). The Mayans sent their pregnant women there to
have the children then return after the deed was done. There are a few hotels on the island.
Most are in the 1 or 2 rate code categories due to the lack of amenities. Is is very laid back except
when the tourists from the mainland arrive. If you want to be close to Cancun but stay in the bay
here it is. The hotels are clean and the food is good.

We usually separate Playa Del Carmen from Cancun not only geographically, but in ambience.
Playa Del Carmen now known as the Mayan Sun Coast is much more laid back with less activity
available in the town. You can still see the Mayan Ruins and enjoy the beaches, but the
availability of night clubs and restaurants is limited. This is why most of the ) Mayan Suncoast Playacar Areahotels are all
inclusive. There are some very nice upscale spa hotels in this area.

The geography is flat and not as visually exciting as on the west coast of Mexico with its
mountains. But the water and beaches are super.

Getting around Taxi's regulated an available twenty-four hours a day at the hotels for the short trip into
downtown Cancun. Remind yourself and those travelling with you to agree on the taxi cab fare
before getting in the cab. The doorman at the hotel or your tour representative can help you with
the acceptable fare from point to point.

Bus service is also available in the hotel zone and is the cheapest way to get around. A special
air-conditioned tourist shuttle bus system runs all day long taking travellers to all points in the
hotel zone and to downtown Cancun City. One of Cancun's best bargains, the trip anywhere on
the island costs only $1.00 U.S.

TIP: Take advantage of the many maps available at the hotel or travel agency desks to help you
find your way around.
