The Virgin of Guadalupeat Tlayacac
Saint Juan Diego
Memorial 9 December
Legend has it that in 1531 the Virgin Mary, appearing with indigenous features and speaking in the native tongue, approached Juan Diego and told him that she was the Virgin of Guadalupe and to build a church on the hill of Tepeyac (where Mexico City stands today). At first, Diego's visions met with much skepticism, but when he appeared before the bishop in her honor with gorgeous red roses out of season, and when they fell to the ground formed the shape of the virgin, belief in Juan Diego quickly gained momentum. And the basilica was built.
Alice and Frank are Bungee-jumping one day. Alice says to Frank, you know, I bet
we could make a lot of money running our own Bungee-jumping service in Mexico City. I don't think it's caught on down there yet, and with their huge population, we'll get rich."
Frank thinks this is a great idea, so they pool their money and buy
everything they'll need; a tower, an elastic cord, insurance, etc.
They travel to Mexico City and begin to set up on the square. As they are constructing
the tower, a crowd begins to assemble. Slowly, more and more people
gather to watch them at work. When they had finished, there was such a
crowd they thought it would be a good idea to give a demonstration. So, Alice jumps.
She bounces at the end of the cord, but when she comes back up, Frank
notices that she has cuts and scratches. Unfortunately, Frank
isn't able to catch her and she falls again, bounces and comes back up again.
This time, she is bruised and bleeding. Again, Frank misses her.
Alice falls again and bounces back up. This time she comes back pretty messed up
-- she appears to have a couple of broken bones and is almost unconscious.
Luckily, Frank finally caught her this time and asked, "What happened-
Was the cord too long?"
Barely able to speak, Alice gasps, "No, the Bungee cord was the right length, but
the crowd had sticks…
What the hell is a piñata?!"
