At 8 square miles, St. Barthelemy's only town is Gustavia,which draws its name from a time when Sweden ruled the island (1784-1878).
A 12 minute flight from St. Maarten or a
ferry ride. The ferry leaves daily from St. Maarten, but can take approximately 1 1/2 hours. It arrives in the evening at St. Barts and can experience rough seas along the way. Therefore, air is recommended and preferred by most travelers.
