New Fast Ferry Operates in Puerto Rico A new high-speed ferry offers service from San Juan to the islands of Culebra and Vieques. Departing from Pier Two in Old San Juan, Island Hi-Speed Ferry reaches Culebra in about one hour and 45 minutes, then continues for the 30-minute journey to Vieques. The ferry operates one round-trip Monday through Thursday and two round-trips Friday through Sunday. Rates range from $17 to $73. Island Hi-Speed Ferry previously operated a ferry on Block Island Sound in Rhode Island. Its partner company, Boston Harbor Cruises, also operates Virgin Island Fast Ferry. We had a very nice time in Puerto Rico, the people were friendly and the island is easy to navigate. While many people don't think of Pureto Rico as a Caribbean destination, it actually has more to offer than some of the other Caribbean islands. Horse racing, diving, casino's, shopping, sight-seeing etc., and it is close enough to the U. S. Virgin islands to do a little island-hopping!
In Puerto Rico there is so much to discover, so much to experience. Exciting history, white sandy beaches, tantalizing local cuisine, world-class attractions and a charming variety of arts and crafts that range from intricate wood carvings of animals and religious figures to the more primitive hammocks and baskets woven from natural fiber.
From 500 years of history, to a different beach for every day of the year! From the Caribbean's most exciting night life to breathtaking natural wonders, world-class shopping, challenging golf courses, the region's most modern infrastructure and more. Whether you are planning a vacation here or just browsing around, Puerto Rico will provide you with just about the best vacation in the Caribbean or the World.
Puerto Rico is the easternmost of the Greater Antilles, surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean to the north and the Caribbean Sea to the south. It is 110 by 35 miles in size. By air, Puerto Rico is 2 1/2 hours southeast of Miami, 3 1/3 hours from New York, 4 1/2 hours from Chicago, and 7 1/2 hours from Los Angeles. The Island's terrain ranges from palm-lined beaches on four coastlines to rugged mountain ranges, gently rolling hills and even dry desert-like areas. There are 20 designated forest reserves in Puerto Rico, the most notable being the 28,000-acre Caribbean National Forest (El Yunque), the only tropical rain forest in the U.S. Forest Service; the Guajataca Forest Reserve, with 25 miles of trails, and the Guánica State Forest, a dry forest with the largest number of bird species on the Island. There are also two bioluminescent bays, one on the southwest coast near La Parguera, and the other off the coast of Vieques Island.
One way that I found to really see the island is by car. The roads are quite good, the only problem is that all the signs are in spanish. When you travel across the island on one of the mountain roads be sure to beep your horn as you go around a curve as traffic can get a bit intense.
Electricity is 110v, 60 cycles.
