Biking Downieville, California

The tiny town of Downieville is five or six blocks long, and as recently as 1990 it was home to only 46 people. But among its historic gold-rush-era buildings you'll find two bike shops: Yuba Expeditions and Downieville Outfitters. This is not just an odd coincidence; it is telling of the key role that mountain biking has come to play in this scenic northern California outpost.

Downieville is located in a forested canyon at the confluence of the Downie River and the north fork of the Yuba River, at an altitude of around 3,000 feet. The steep hills and rivers that surround the town, and its location in the middle of the trail-riddled Tahoe National Forest, make it a perfect spot for mountain biking. The prime riding season is June through October. Snow may prevent riding at other times of the year.

The incredible Downieville Downhill starts at 7,150 feet, amidst the tall firs of the Tahoe National Forest, and continues down to town on beautiful forested singletrack, following clear mountain streams along the way. The most popular way to do this ride is to take a shuttle from Downieville to Packer Saddle, then ride back along this spectacular route. Riders not afraid of climbing can make this a loop ride.

Another great ride, the Chimney Rock Trail, begins at the junction of Saddleback Road and Cal Ida Road. The trail climbs moderately for one mile, reaching Chimney Rock at an elevation of 6,700 feet. Chimney Rock is a large, striking volcanic rock, 12 feet in diameter at its base, that rises straight up for 25 feet. At this point you'll have a beautiful 360-degree vista, and you'll understand why tiny Downieville is starting to hit the map for destination mountain bikers. Descend via Empire Creek Canyon, several roads and the First Divide Trail to get back to town. Check with the local shops for more details, maps, shuttles and supported trips.

Downieville offers basic accommodations and of course, a bar and Mexican restaurant, because after all, no self-respecting mountain biker would venture to a destination that lacked these. Fly into a nearby airport, including Sacramento, Reno and Lake Tahoe, and you can link several fun trips together in a week's time.
