HAWAIIAN MARKETPLACE, a Polynesian-themed retail, entertainment and dining complex inspired by the famed Int'l Marketplace in Honolulu, opened last week on the Strip. The $175 million, 80,000-square-foot marketplace features re-creations of Banyan trees, a statue of King Kamehameha, tropical plants, and a flock of animatronic birds that sing, dance and tell Hawaiian folktales. To entertain shoppers, there's Team Aloha, a Las Vegas-based troupe of island-born performers who dance, tell stories and make crafts, as well as Samoan fire-knife dancers, who juggle and twirl flaming knives. Tenants in the marketplace range from clothing retailers to food and beverage outlets. There's a 7-Eleven convenience store and a wedding chapel, Weddings on the Strip.

The Las Vegas Historic Museum opened late last month at the Tropicana Resort & Casino, replacing the Casino Legends Hall of Fame, which closed in March after seven years at the property. The new attraction features several exhibits that focus on gaming, entertainers, mobsters and brothels such as Madam Kitty's Sheri's Ranch, the Green Lantern, the Mustang Ranch and the Chicken Ranch. For example, the Gambling & Gangsters section of the museum includes a video about the Las Vegas mafia as well as several giant-size photos of well-known mobsters Bugsy Siegel, Frank Rosenthal and Al Capone. Visitors also can take in memorabilia from such stars as Louis Prima, Judy Garland, John Wayne, Elvis Presley and Liberace.
