Pinehurst Golf Resort
"Home of American Golf."
Located in the southern Sandhills of North Carolina, Pinehurst is home to some of the most hallowed grounds in the game of golf. The site of the 1999 and 2005 U.S. Open Championships, Pinehurst claims eight courses, designed by the likes of Donald Ross, Rees Jones, George Fazio and his nephew Tom Fazio. Although it has its detractors, the No. 2 course is widely considered the best - earning the number 10 and 12 ranking in the U.S. from Golfweek and Golf Digest, respectively, and ranked ninth in the world by Golf Magazine.
Despite its simple appearance, sans water hazards and other obvious dangers, acclaimed golf course architect Tripp Davis says, "#2 is one of the best courses I have ever played relative to strategy on the surface and psychological strategy that bends one's mind."
But Pinehurst is certainly more than the sum of its parts. Almost everyone who has been fortunate enough to visit this bit of living golf history refers to the Pinehurst "experience" when they describe their trip.
Pinehurst offers four different options for accommodations, including the centerpiece Carolina Hotel, The Holly, with southern inn-style guest rooms, The Manor, for more relaxed accommodations, the private Villas for groups of four and eight, and one- two- and three-bedroom condominiums for families.
The Spa at Pinehurst® offers numerous body wraps and skin treatments, as well as guided workouts in the Fitness Center, and manicures, pedicures and the like at the Image Center.
The debate will continue to rage about which course is best, and which is overrated. But you can be sure that there is consensus when talking about the Pinehurst experience with those who've been there: they'll tell you that if you get the chance, you definitely shouldn't miss it.
