Excellent golf on the Kohala Coast

There are 20 magnificent courses on Hawaii's Big Island (and more are being developed).

The island has everything from snow-capped volcanoes, to tropical rainforests, to snorkeling in the amazing world that awaits below the water's surface. Inevitably, some of us will blindly forgo all those natural wonders just for a few unforgettable rounds of golf. You know who you are, and you won't be disappointed.

In the world of golf, the Big Island is highly regarded, and alongside The Fairmont Orchid, Hawaii is the award-winning 36-hole Francis H. I'i Brown Golf Course. Opened in 1981, it is consistently lauded as one of the world's top golf resorts by readers of Condé Nast Traveler magazine. The course has spectacular scenery with ocean views and green fairways patterned with black lava. Golf Magazine called the course "one of the most breathtakingly beautiful seaside golf courses in the world" and awarded it the prestigious gold medal, designating it one of this country's finest golf resort courses.

The course has two distinct 18-hole complexes, the south and north courses. The South Course snakes through a spiny, basaltic lava bed. In addition to excellent golf, this challenging course also offers inspiring mountain and ocean views, and was home of the Senior Skins Game for 10 years. The North Course is characterized by rolling terrain and kiawe (mesquite) groves. The trees often come into play here, and a 230-acre protected archaeological district touches the northern boundary of the course. Herds of feral goats frequent the entire course, moving from hole to hole throughout the day.

WAIKOLOA Beach & Golf Resort:
Beach and Kings courses,

The Kona-Kohala area comprises the entire western coast of Hawaii's Big Island, and is a recreational paradise, for reasons ranging from golf to triathlon to pure relaxation.

The Four Seasons Hualalai offers the signature Jack Nicklaus Hualalai Golf Course. Winding over 7,100 yards, this course begins in a lush kipuka (oasis) and then flows across brilliant green fairways contoured against black lava. Finally, the course returns to the ocean, where the final holes offer a dramatic, seaside finish. As one visitor said, "The condition was absolutely immaculate…the best I have ever seen… and the greens were amazing. With the rough cut pretty short, the course is fairly forgiving and enjoyable to play."

Other courses of note on the Kona-Kohala coasts are Big Island Country Club, Makalei Hawaii Country Club, and the public Kona Country Club, offering the Ocean and Ali'i courses.
