French Saints

The Poor Fellow-Soldiers of Christ and of the Temple of Solomon ), commonly known as the Knights Templar or the Order of the Temple were among the most famous of the Christian military orders. On Friday, October 13, 1307, King Philip had many of the Order's members, including the Grand Master Jacques de Molay, arrested, tortured into "confessions", and burned at the stake. (In recent times this fact has been cited as the origin of the superstitious belief that Friday the 13th is unlucky; but there is no evidence that this superstition existed before the early 20th century, let alone connected with the events of 1307.)
